A BOX IN THE SEA

PROCESS

SOUND

Step one: Sound design is an unlimited transient medium that mutates seamlessly between micro-cellular levels and gargantuan star-sized concepts. It is a persistent and critical part to my visual creations. During experimentation I extract aggregate sound waves and minute control voltages for absorption into code.

CODE

Step two: I use a node-based visual program to capture, convert, normalize, scale and algorithmically manipulate the sound and voltage data.  The process is bi-directional as segments of code are feedback into the sound and recaptured. The final results are summarized for transmission to the mechanical printing process.

MACHINE

Step Three: The code is translated and replicated with a plotter. This electro-mechanical device is fed coordinates and uses servo motors to push and pull a writing instrument in finite cartesian space. Though mechanical, this process is vulnerable to failures, glitches and human error. I find this intrinsically beautiful.

MATERIALS

Paper is always archival and depending on the pen and ink combination and drawing concept the color varies. Pen and ink: Rotring Isograph - black, red, blue and white ink. Bic Crystal - black ink. Pilot Hi-Tec-C - black ink.

EDITIONS

For now all images will be printed in a limited run of 5. Each image is unique. That means the one in the series for sale will have its own printing characteristics (see plotter description above). These will always be visible before purchasing.

ON WASTE

I am very careful to test my concepts as far as possible before committing them to paper. I use pens with refillable reservoirs and I’m researching ways to reuse the ones that don’t.

PRINT EDITIONS

ALL ORIGINAL DESIGNS, PRINTS AND MUSIC BY ABITS

MUSIC EDITIONS

PRINTS

The printing system is a true hybrid between the material world of paper, pen, ink, motors and metal with the digital precision of algorithms and tireless execution. Yet it is anything but fast (some prints require 16+ hours to complete) or accurately repeatable. Along the way ink runs out and all manner of variance occurs. It perfectly mirrors my visual and auditory biases, it’s thoughtful across multiple disciplines, the materials disallow photographic reproduction (let alone any scale) and it is deceptively delicate. All that is to say your order may take extra time while the systemic impact of ghosts and happy accident collide.

PHYSICAL MUSIC EDITIONS

I design, cut, construct, paint, print and release very limited physical music editions. They are experiments, mere attempts to materially convey their sonic content thematically and imperfectly. I have many to release this year… it’s been a long time.

SHIPPING

UNITED STATES: All shipments will be sent via USPS Priority Mail with a tracking number. Most deliveries in the US will take 1-3 weeks to arrive.

INTERNATIONAL: I’ll do my best to ship via USPS Priority Mail with a tracking number. Most deliveries will take 2-4 weeks to arrive.

IMPLANTED MEMORIES

I engage with the world in motion as I have done since youth. The circular subconscious obviousness of it plays out in my day-to-day. Patterns that I have both created and chased for years and ultimately sought to "draw", which I articulate here in picture form. Some may see my artistic trajectory as a linear progression, whereas I know it to have been more of an ebb and flow. Oscillations of highs and lows, which in themselves are more overtly represented and showcased in my current work.

Most notably these images are a nexus. A culminated visualization of my time spent navigating surfaces both physical, while skateboarding, and fluid, from a lifetime of surfing various oceans wherever land and sea push into each other.

Through all of this, the river-like flow of work, I have found various forms of relaxation wherein my creativity has been allowed to regenerate, oftentimes expressively taking on a shape of its own. A Box In The Sea.

Decades of sonic exploration and tinkering with computer code, a buoyancy I have sought to tap out into a keyboard, which through the wizardry of electronica echoes as audio and once again loops back upon itself in ink, a temporal yet poetic cartesian process of mechanized imaging that ghosts and glides itself across space, surfaces, and provides an oceanic murmur of what lingers deep within. Each image, balances the vastness outlined above and holds in it a digital attenuated pattern, the result of a visceral compulsion, a conductor's baton in contemporary interplay of electronic human expression and physical activity.
